Formal Definition

Government issue definition of NSN 5990-00-415-5351

An item consisting of a rotor and a stator inductively coupled. It has wye connected and quadrature windings, either of which can be stator or the rotor and serve as the primary for input voltages. The output voltages are trigonometric functions of the input voltages and the angular displacement of the rotor with respect to the stator. See also synchro (as modified). Excludes resolver, electrical and potentiometer sine/cosine electrical resolvers.
