An electro-mechanical, self-contained unit specifically designed to permanently join the ends of two optical fibers by fusion. It may also be used to install a protective heat-shrinkable tubing over the fused fibers. In addition to the fusion device, the unit may include an optical viewer, a fiber alignment device, a fiber cleaving device, and/or a means for illuminating the electrode area of the unit.
