Formal Definition

Government issue definition of NSN 8465-01-615-0261

A rope fitting, consisting of a guide for the rope without a hand and/or automatically operated braking mechanism, that secures a climber's position on a rope and enables controlled movement on the rope. The user must provide friction by physically holding the rope in a stated direction in order for the braking action to occur. Releasing the rope causes a release in friction. It is used by climbers for rappelling, belaying or stopping a fall.
